Introduction

Welcome to the English Department at Belmont Academy! We are dedicated to providing a rich and varied education in English language and literature to students at every stage of their academic journey. Our department offers courses in BGE (Broad General Education), National 4, National 5, Higher, and Advanced Higher levels, ensuring that every student receives a high-quality education that is tailored to their individual needs.

In the English department, learners are given opportunities to study a wide range of literature, developing their analysis and evaluation skills and exploring connections between the texts they read and the world we live in. They are also given extensive opportunities to create their own texts, both written and spoken, encouraging them to develop their language skills through producing creative, critical and transactional responses.

Through the study of language, literature and media, pupils develop their reading, writing, talking and listening skills, enabling them to develop their ability to contribute and communicate effectively in a range of contexts.

In addition to our core English curriculum that focus on reading, writing, and critical analysis, we also offer courses in Media Studies at both National 5 and Higher levels, as well as Drama in S3 and National 5. These courses provide students with the opportunity to explore new forms of creative expression and to develop skills that will be valuable in a wide range of future careers.

Studying English at Belmont Academy opens up many exciting career opportunities. English graduates are highly valued in fields such as journalism, publishing, law, education, marketing, and public relations, as well as in the creative arts. A degree in English also provides an excellent foundation for further study in fields such as literature, creative writing, and cultural studies.

Our English Department is staffed by a team of dedicated and experienced teachers who are passionate about their subject and committed to helping each and every student achieve their full potential. We believe that studying English is not only intellectually stimulating but also enriches students' lives and helps them to become more informed and engaged members of their communities.
